Step-by-step smoke leak testing
Step-by-Step Instructions
Use SDT106 with a 12V DC battery and 10–15 mL liquid paraffin or baby oil. After the detector starts producing smoke, allow the test line to fill, then inspect for escaping smoke to locate leaks.
Step 01
Add Testing Oil
For first use, fill 10–15 mL baby oil or liquid paraffin into the detector. Do not overfill.
Step 02
Connect the Test Line
Access the system to be tested, position the smoke leak detector securely, then disconnect the line you want to test and connect it to the detector.
Step 03
Connect 12V DC Power
Connect the smoke leak detector to a 12V DC battery, then turn on the power switch to start the detector.
Step 04
Locate the Leak
After smoke fills the test line, inspect for escaping smoke to locate leaks. Use a headlamp if extra visibility is needed.

Safety & Compatibility
SDT106 has a built-in air pump and is intended for permitted low-pressure visual smoke checks. It outputs less than 12 psi and less than 5 L/min, but it has no pressure gauge, flow meter, or flow adjustment, so do not use it as a pressure-measuring or high-pressure test tool.
12V Power and Built-In Air Pump
Connect SDT106 to a 12V DC battery before use. The built-in air pump provides the test airflow, so you do not need an external compressor.
Use Visible Smoke Within the Low-Pressure Limit
SDT106 outputs less than 12 psi and less than 5 L/min. Because it has no pressure gauge, flow meter, or flow adjustment, use visible smoke to locate permitted low-pressure leaks and stay within the service limits for the system you are testing.
Testing Oil Is Not Included
Testing oil is not included. Use liquid paraffin or baby oil and add 10–15 mL before first use.
Refill Only When Smoke Becomes Thin
Add fresh oil only when the smoke output becomes thin. Drain the remaining oil first, then add fresh oil without exceeding 15 mL at one time.
Limit Continuous Use to 8 Minutes
Do not run SDT106 continuously for more than 8 minutes. Let the unit rest between test cycles.
75°C Overheat Protection
Automatic overheat protection shuts off power if the internal temperature exceeds 75°C. Let the unit cool before using it again.
Operating Temperature and Hot Surfaces
SDT106 supports operation down to -20°C. The round metal housing can become hot during use, so avoid touching hot surfaces directly.
Follow the Service Limits for the System
Do not introduce smoke into any component or system excluded by the vehicle or component service procedure. SDT106 is for permitted low-pressure smoke testing, not high-pressure system testing.
