How To Choose

How To Choose

Choose your SDT series smoke machine by checking whether you need external-compressor EVAP testing, built-in pump convenience, air + smoke dual output, higher workshop efficiency, or SDT208 dual pressure modes.

Need Simple Smoke Testing?

Choose SDT50, SDT100, SDT106, or SDT203 if you mainly need a smoke-mode leak detector for general automotive pipe, vacuum, intake, exhaust, and fuel system leak checks.

Need EVAP Low-Pressure Testing?

Choose SDT101 or SDT103 for EVAP-focused low-pressure testing around 32mbar. These two models do not have built-in air pumps and must be used with an external air compressor.

Need Built-In Pump Convenience?

Choose SDT60 if you want an EVAP-friendly model with a built-in air pump for easier direct use instead of connecting SDT101 or SDT103 to an external compressor.

Need Air + Smoke Dual Output?

Choose SDT205, SDT205S, SDT206, or SDT208. These models support air mode for pressure checking and smoke mode for visual leak locating.

Need A Busy Workshop Model?

Choose SDT206 for built-in dual air pumps, air + smoke modes, flow monitoring, pressure display, oil drain, and oil level observation. It is better suited to frequent workshop use.

Need Dual Pressure Modes?

Choose SDT208 if you need both 10 psi low-pressure mode and 35 psi high-pressure mode, plus DC12V / 24V input support and higher output flow for flexible diagnostic scenarios.

Specifications

Specifications

Use this compact summary together with the comparison chart. All listed SDT models use low-oxygen smoke generation, 10-15ml test oil filling volume, and high-temperature protection that stops operation above 75°C. The chart lists fast smoke response; actual time to fill a tested line depends on model, pipe volume, sealing condition, and oil condition.

Key Features

Key Features

The SDT series focuses on visible smoke leak detection, model-specific air source options, dual-mode diagnostics, monitoring functions, protection design, and broad automotive system coverage.

Visible Smoke Leak Detection

SDT smoke machines generate visible smoke to help locate leaks in sealed automotive systems, reducing blind troubleshooting and unnecessary disassembly.

Built-In Or External Air Source

Most SDT models include built-in air pumps. SDT101 and SDT103 are external-air-source models and must be connected to an external air compressor.

Air + Smoke Dual Mode Options

SDT205, SDT205S, SDT206, and SDT208 support air mode and smoke mode, allowing users to check pressure behavior first and then locate leaks visually.

Pressure And Flow Monitoring

Selected models include pressure gauges, flow meter windows, flow adjustment knobs, oil drain valves, and oil level gauges, depending on model configuration.

Protection For Workshop Use

The SDT series stops working above 75°C for high-temperature protection. Related instructions also note low-temperature operation down to -20°C under proper conditions.

Wide Automotive Coverage

Suitable for checking leaks in intake pipes, exhaust pipes, fuel lines, turbochargers, vacuum lines, EVAP systems, and other sealed low-pressure automotive systems.

How It Works

How It Works

AUTOOL SDT smoke leak detectors use low-oxygen smoke generation. Test oil is heated into visible smoke, then the smoke is introduced into the tested system and escapes from leak points.

Heating Element

The internal heating element raises the temperature of mineral oil, baby oil, or liquid paraffin until it reaches smoke-generating conditions.

Low-Oxygen Smoke Generation

Because the intake flow is limited, the low-oxygen environment helps produce thick visible smoke instead of full combustion.

Leak Visualization

Smoke enters the sealed system and escapes through cracks, loose joints, weak seals, or leaking pipes so the user can locate the leak visually.

How To Use

How To Use

Use the SDT series with the correct power supply, 10-15ml baby oil or liquid paraffin, and a properly sealed test system. For SDT101 and SDT103, connect the required external air compressor before testing.

Add Test Oil

Add 10-15ml baby oil or liquid paraffin into the detector before use. Do not overfill, because excessive oil can occupy the internal smoke-generation space and cause abnormal smoke output.

Seal And Connect The Test System

Open the vehicle system or pipe section that needs testing, seal the connection as needed, and connect the smoke hose or suitable adapter to the tested pipeline.

Connect Power And Air Source

Connect the detector to the required power supply. Most models use DC12V; SDT208 supports DC12V / 24V. Connect an external air compressor when using SDT101 or SDT103.

Run Air Or Smoke Mode

Use air mode first on supported models to check pressure behavior, then use smoke mode to introduce smoke and visually locate leak points. Visible smoke response depends on model and sealing condition.

Use Notes

  • SDT101 and SDT103 require an external air compressor.
  • Use baby oil or liquid paraffin as test oil when professional test oil is unavailable.
  • Do not overfill test oil; excessive oil may cause no smoke or liquid spray.
  • Do not run continuously for more than 8 minutes. Let the detector rest between uses.
  • If no smoke appears, drain excess oil and add about 10ml fresh test oil again.
Before You Order And Use

Before You Order And Use

Review oil filling, power supply, compressor requirements, continuous-use limits, hot-surface caution, and unsuitable residential duct testing before operation.

Purchase And Operation Notes

  • Each use only requires about 10-15ml baby oil or liquid paraffin.
  • Testing oil may not be included due to logistics restrictions. Buy liquid paraffin or baby oil locally if needed.
  • Avoid adding excessive test oil, because overfilling may occupy the internal smoke-generation space and prevent normal smoke output.
  • If the source instruction mentions 15-20ml for first use, avoid exceeding the safe internal oil level. If smoke output is abnormal, drain oil and restart with about 10ml fresh oil.
  • Most SDT models require DC12V power. SDT208 supports DC12V / 24V input.
  • Only SDT101 and SDT103 do not have built-in air pumps and require connection to an external air compressor.
  • If you need direct use with a built-in air pump, choose another model such as SDT60.
  • Do not run the detector continuously for more than 8 minutes. Allow rest intervals between uses.
  • Metal parts and heated areas may become hot during operation. Avoid direct contact to prevent burns.
  • Residential AC duct leak testing is not recommended because duct openings usually have poor sealing, which can make smoke testing unreliable.

I really like the AUTOOL smoke leak detector. It has a built-in air pump, reliable quality, and the material feels very thick, not a thin piece of iron sheet. It is much more reliable than the Ancel smoke leak detector I used before. The test oil only requires 15ml of baby oil, and it produces smoke easily!
