Step-by-step smoke leak testing
Step-by-Step Instructions
Use the SDT50 with a 12V DC battery, liquid paraffin or baby oil, and the included smoke hose. Connect the test line securely before turning on the unit.
Step 01
Add Testing Oil
Fill 10–15 mL baby oil or liquid paraffin into the detector before first use. Do not exceed this range.
Step 02
Connect the Test Line
Access the system to be tested and position the detector near the test area. Disconnect the line you want to test, then connect it to the smoke hose.
Step 03
Power On
Connect the detector to a 12V DC battery. Confirm that the smoke hose and test line are connected securely, then turn on the power switch.
Step 04
Locate Leaks
In about 30 seconds, the connected test line will be filled with smoke. Inspect for escaping smoke to locate leaks and use a headlamp if necessary.

Safety & Compatibility
SDT50 is designed for visual low-pressure smoke leak checks. It has a built-in air pump but no pressure gauge, flow meter, or flow adjustment, so locate leaks by visible smoke and stay within the service limits for the system you are testing.
12V Power and Built-In Air Pump
Connect SDT50 to a 12V DC battery before use. The built-in air pump provides the test airflow, so you do not need an external compressor.
Use Visible Smoke, Not Pressure or Flow Readings
SDT50 outputs less than 10 psi and less than 5 L/min. Because it has no pressure gauge, flow meter, or flow adjustment, use visible smoke to locate permitted low-pressure leaks rather than trying to measure pressure or airflow with the unit.
Add 10–15 mL of Testing Oil
Use liquid paraffin or baby oil as testing oil. Add 10–15 mL before first use and do not exceed 15 mL at one time.
Refill Only When Smoke Becomes Thin
Add fresh oil only when the smoke output becomes thin. Drain the remaining oil first, then add fresh oil without exceeding 15 mL at one time.
Limit Continuous Use to 8 Minutes
Do not run SDT50 continuously for more than 8 minutes. If the internal temperature exceeds 75°C, the unit shuts off automatically. Let it cool before restarting.
Operating Temperature and Hot Surfaces
SDT50 supports operation down to -20°C. The round metal housing can become hot during use, so avoid touching hot surfaces directly.
Check Connections Before Starting Smoke
Before starting smoke, make sure the smoke hose and test line are connected securely. Follow the vehicle or component service procedure, and do not introduce smoke into any system where smoke testing is not permitted.

Does SDT50 Need an External Air Pump?
No. AUTOOL SDT50 has a built-in air pump, so it does not require a separate air supply or extra air pump for normal smoke leak detection.
What Testing Oil Should I Use?
Liquid paraffin and baby oil are both acceptable testing oils for SDT50. Replace the testing oil regularly, and drain remaining old oil before adding fresh oil.
How Much Oil Should I Add?
Fill 10–15 mL oil before first use. Do not exceed this range. Fresh oil can be added only when smoke becomes thin, and do not add more than 15 mL each time.
What Power Supply Does SDT50 Need?
