The Autool HTS558 worked well on a N14 Mini engine right out of the box with little modification to the nozzle length. I can¡¯t wait to try it out on a engine with less awkwardly placed intake ports.My only complaint was that one of the vacuum wheels were broken when the unit arrived. I assume the wheel was broken from harsh shipping as the box was a little beat up when it arrived.

The instructions are rather sparse and in broken English, but that’s not surprising given the country of origin. Not mentioned in the description is that it does include two bags of media, which was a nice surprise.I bought this rather than piecing together a media blaster and shop vac. It’s convenient in that the hopper chamber is below a sieve in the recovery tank, so it basically pulls the spent/reusable media back into the hopper, allowing more continuous operation without having to stop to reload. You do sometimes have to give the unit a shake to settle the recovered media through the sieve. The “filter” touted in the description is above the return, rather than between it and the hopper/sieve, and it’s basically the air filter that protects the motor like any other shop vac. It does absolutely nothing for separating the carbon and recovered media (I had been trying to figure out how it could before purchasing). This allows some of the carbon removed to become part of your media, but I also found very large chunks that couldn’t go through the sieve to the hopper chamber, so no big deal.I’ve only used it on one engine so far, but it worked very well for cleaning. It took a bit to figure out how to tell where I was aiming with the suction attachment in place, but once you do, it goes quickly. I’d recommend keeping an eye on the feeder tube, as it relies on Venturi suction from the nozzle to suck it out of the hopper. There were a couple of passes that had little to no effect because the port in the hopper had become uncovered (this is where shaking the unit from time to time to settle the media in the chamber is important). Bear in mind that once completed, you may still be able to see some buildup on the backside of the valve/stem due to not being able to blast it from the necessary angle (kind of like a shadow area), but it easily removed over 90% of the buildup.The things I might like to change to improve its functionality would be: 1) Adding a shut off for the media line so that you can use just the air nozzle to stir up the media and vacuum it out when you’re done with that port. There’s a shut off line for the air already to help reduce accidental discharge. 2) Include a curved nozzle/wand to help get deeper into certain engines. The one I was working on (GM 3.6) has very deep intake ports through the head that take a slight turn. The straight wand made it difficult to get to the valves. My only other suggestion would be to get one of the custom-made-to-the-engine vacuum attachments if you’re going to be doing very many. I managed to seal it off well enough with the included attachments, but it was more work.Before and after pic tax.
