Due to the lack of traditional means of testing batteries, battery dealers, auto repair stations, and car dealers may return good batteries to manufacturers as bad batteries. According to INTERSTATE, an auto battery distributor in the U.S., 50% of the so-called bad batteries returned are good. These batteries need to be recharged, not replaced.

Those good batteries can move needlessly back and forth between manufacturers and dealers because of erroneous judgment, causing unnecessary consumption. At the same time, many auto repair outlets lack efficient inspection tools, so they may fail to detect weakened batteries in time before owners encounter problems. That means they also lose potential battery sales opportunities.

Traditional auxiliary tests, such as specific gravity indication and terminal voltage, reflect the battery’s state of charge (SOC), not its health (SOH). Therefore, they cannot be used as an effective way to check whether the battery needs to be replaced.

How to Test a Car Battery with AUTOOL BT760

1. Open the hood and find the battery

Open the hood and locate the vehicle battery before connecting the tester.

2. Connect the battery tester

Remove the plastic protective cover of the battery.

Connect the black cable clip of the battery tester to the negative terminal of the battery. Then connect the red cable clip to the positive terminal of the battery.

3. Test the voltage

Use the voltage test mode to check the battery status. Most car battery voltages are 12V, while some are 24V. You can use a simple voltmeter to test voltage, but a battery tester will also work and can provide more context.

4. Perform cranking test

Set the battery tester to cranking test mode, then start the vehicle. The tester will record the lowest voltage that the battery is able to maintain while the starter motor is working.

5. Conduct a load test

Select the maximum load test function, turn on the car appliance, start the car engine, click OK, and wait for the result to come out.

6. Charging test

After entering the charging test function, follow the instructions to increase the speed to 2500 rpm for 5 seconds, then press OK. Wait for the result to come out, and then the test is finished.

7. Print test results

After the test is completed, there will be a print option. Click OK to print the battery test results.
