Carry Self-Contained Smoke Testing Between Bays
Use this automotive smoke leak detector for permitted low-pressure checks in different locations without an external air supply. The built-in pump starts producing smoke in about five seconds, while the compact 1.5 kg body supports visual tracing across approved intake, exhaust, fuel-tank, crankcase, sealing, line-fitting, and coolant-tank paths.

Fill 10–15 mL baby oil or liquid paraffin into the detector before first use. Do not exceed this range.

Access the system to be tested and position the detector near the test area. Disconnect the line you want to test, then connect it to the smoke hose.

Connect the detector to a 12V DC battery. Confirm that the smoke hose and test line are connected securely, then turn on the power switch.

In about 30 seconds, the connected test line will be filled with smoke. Inspect for escaping smoke to locate leaks and use a headlamp if necessary.

Confirm System Pressure, Ventilation, and Connections

The built-in pump supplies test airflow after SDT50 is connected to a 12V DC battery.
Add 10–15 mL of Testing Oil
Use liquid paraffin or baby oil as testing oil. Add 10–15 mL before first use and do not exceed 15 mL at one time.

Check Connections Before Starting Smoke
Before starting smoke, make sure the smoke hose and test line are connected securely. Follow the vehicle or component service procedure, and do not introduce smoke into any system where smoke testing is not permitted.

Does SDT50 Need an External Air Pump?

What Testing Oil Should I Use?
Liquid paraffin and baby oil are both acceptable testing oils for SDT50. Replace the testing oil regularly, and drain remaining old oil before adding fresh oil.
How Much Oil Should I Add?
Fill 10–15 mL oil before first use. Do not exceed this range. Fresh oil can be added only when smoke becomes thin, and do not add more than 15 mL each time.

Very good quality, better than other brands I have used before. This smoke leak detector has a built-in air pump. It is small and easy to carry. I can use it easily. The smoke effect is good. A lot of smoke is produced in 20 seconds. I use baby oil.
