Dedicated EVAP and Standard Pressure Controls

Standard and EVAP Pressure Modes

Standard Mode is rated at 35 psi, while EVAP Mode is rated at 10 psi to better protect EVAP lines during testing. Standard Mode supports output up to 35 psi, while EVAP Mode stays below 10 psi. Select either mode only when the vehicle or component service procedure permits that pressure.

Tiny-Leak Checks

EVAP Mode supports controlled repair-shop EVAP checks, including tiny leaks down to about 0.5 mm, while pressure protection helps protect the system under test. After connecting and isolating the system at a permitted pressure, use visible smoke to inspect accessible joints, hoses, and seals for an escape path.

Airflow Meter

The airflow meter helps identify possible leaks by showing changes in airflow.

Supports visual leak checks on exhaust sections, crankcase systems, and line fittings. It can also assist with low-pressure checks around fuel-tank sealing areas and automotive line connections. Use it for selected low-pressure turbo, intercooler, and air-path leak checks within the stated pressure limits.

Visible Oil Level Gauge

The SDT208 interface includes an oil level gauge together with the airflow meter, pressure gauge, power indicator, and alarm indicator.

Overheat and Low-Temperature Protection

Automatic overheat protection shuts off power above 75°C, and the unit supports operation down to -20°C.

Add Testing Oil

Fill 10–15 mL baby oil or liquid paraffin into the detector before use. Do not overfill.

Never Apply Standard Mode to a Low-Pressure EVAP Task

12V / 24V Power and Built-In Air Pump

Connect SDT208 to a 12V or 24V DC battery before use. The built-in air pump provides the test airflow, so you do not need an external compressor.

Choose the Pressure Mode Before Testing

Use EVAP Mode for EVAP-focused testing below 10 psi. Standard Mode is available up to 35 psi, but select it only when the vehicle or component service procedure permits that pressure range.

Use the Oil-Level Gauge, but Keep the 10–15 mL Fill Limit

Testing oil is not included. Use liquid paraffin or baby oil, add 10–15 mL before use, and use the oil-level gauge to check the current oil volume without overfilling.

Limit Continuous Use to 8 Minutes

Do not run SDT208 continuously for more than 8 minutes. Automatic overheat protection shuts the unit down above 75°C. Let the unit cool before restarting.

Operating Temperature and Hot Surfaces

SDT208 supports operation down to -20°C. The round metal housing can become hot during use, so avoid touching hot surfaces directly.

Do Not Use for Direct High-Pressure A/C Testing

Standard Mode can reach up to 35 psi, but SDT208 still cannot directly pressure-test an automotive A/C high-pressure system. If a service procedure permits smoke on an isolated A/C line section, use smoke only as an indirect visual aid.

Match the Adapter and Test Procedure to the System

Use the correct adapter and pressure mode for the selected system. Follow the vehicle or component service procedure, and do not introduce smoke or pressure where the procedure does not permit it.

Trace the Leak with Smoke

Use visible smoke to trace the leak area. If no smoke appears, recheck isolation, flow, and the test setup before continuing.

Never Refill While Running

Do not refill testing oil while SDT208 is running.

Respect Selected Mode Limits

Use pressure and airflow controls only within the selected mode’s permitted range.

Cool Before Restarting

Let the unit cool before restarting after overheat protection is triggered.

What Testing Oil Should I Use for SDT208?

Testing oil is not included. If dedicated smoke-testing oil is unavailable, use liquid paraffin or baby oil.

How Much Testing Oil Should I Add?

Add 10–15 mL testing oil before use. Do not add more than 15 mL each time. Refill only when the smoke becomes thin, and drain the remaining testing oil before adding fresh oil. If too much oil is added accidentally, drain some oil out before operation.

What Power Supply Does SDT208 Need?

SDT208 requires a 12V or 24V DC battery. Connect the detector to the battery correctly before turning on the unit.

Can SDT208 Detect EVAP Leaks?

Yes. SDT208 can be used for EVAP leak checks. Use EVAP Mode with the EVAP adapter or service tool that matches the vehicle test port.

Can SDT208 Directly Test Automotive A/C System Leaks?

No. The automotive A/C system operates at about 1.7–3.0 MPa output pressure, while smoke leak detectors generate much lower pressure. SDT208 cannot directly pressure-test the automotive A/C system for leaks. Use smoke only to help inspect an A/C line section after isolating and pressurizing it according to the service procedure.

How Can Smoke Help Locate a Leak in an Isolated A/C Line Section?

First isolate and pressurize the A/C line segment according to the vehicle or A/C service procedure. Then apply smoke near the test section and observe whether escaping airflow disturbs the smoke. If escaping air moves the smoke, inspect that area for a possible leak.

What Systems Can SDT208 Test?

SDT208 supports low-pressure leak checks on EVAP, intake, exhaust, crankcase, fuel-tank, vacuum-line, vehicle-sealing, and line-fitting systems. For selected turbo or intercooler paths, SDT208 can also be used as a turbo smoke tester. Standard Mode is available up to 35 psi, but use it only when the vehicle or component service procedure allows that pressure range.

How Do I Read the Pressure Gauge and Flow Meter?

Use the pressure gauge and flow meter to monitor pressure and airflow during the test. In general, if the pressure gauge continues to rise and stabilize, the test line may have no obvious leak. If the pressure continues to decrease, the line may have a leak that needs further inspection and repair.

Can I Adjust the Pressure on SDT208?

SDT208 provides Standard Mode and EVAP Mode, plus airflow adjustment through the regulator. It is not designed as an unrestricted high-pressure tester. Use the pressure mode specified for the selected system, and do not apply smoke pressure where the vehicle or component service procedure excludes smoke testing.
