A/C Odor Guide

Once the summer heat comes, the frequency of air conditioning use is high. Set the air volume to the maximum and the temperature to the minimum, and a gust of cold wind gives burning skin a moment of relief.

But if the cold wind comes with an odor, such as the smell of earth, plastic, decay, or mold, the air conditioning system needs attention.

Odor source

Why it smells

Why Does the Car Air Conditioning Smell Bad?

First, we need to figure out why there is an odor.

1. Continuous Heavy Rain

The car air conditioning system has a part called the evaporator. Its role is cooling, and all the wind passing through it will become cold air. If the owner encounters several days of continuous heavy rain, the humid environment will make the evaporator become a breeding ground for mold and fungus.

The resulting mold and fungus masses will produce a rotten and moldy smell that is emitted into the car through the air vents. It is unpleasant to smell and also harmful to health.

2. Long-Term Smoking in the Car

Many drivers like to smoke in traffic jams to relieve the torment of time. Most models use an activated-carbon air-conditioning filter, which has adsorption capacity on the surface and can remove many odors and harmful gases.

However, if you smoke in the car for a long time, the smell of smoke, tar, and other residues can remain on the filter, aggravating the odor and resulting in the need to do early maintenance of the air conditioning system.

3. Dead Insects in the Ducts

Air conditioning systems have air outlets and air inlets, and when the external cycle is turned on, many small insects will come in through the external cycle air inlet. These little insects have no return, and their rotten bodies may lie inside the air conditioning ducts and air ducts.

This creates an unpleasant smell and allows many harmful bacteria and fungi to breed.

Solution

How to Deal With Car A/C Odor

1. Prepare Air Conditioning Cleaner

Buy a bottle of car air conditioning cleaner, and it must be the type with a small hose-free design. The basic effects are cleaning, sterilization, and deodorization. The price ranges from 9.9 yuan to 100 yuan.

2. Remove the Air Conditioning Filter

The air conditioning filter is generally inside the passenger glove box and is relatively easy to remove. After removing the air conditioning filter, you can see inside. Remove it directly, wait until the cleaning is complete, and then replace it with a new one.

3. Find the External Air Intake

Find the external air intake, generally in the lower right of the front windshield or close to the engine location. If you cannot find it, turn on the air conditioning to the maximum and enable external circulation. Near this area you can feel where the air enters.

4. Spray Cleaner Into the Intake

Adjust the air conditioning setting to maximum, enable external circulation, and turn on A/C. Then spray the cleaner with the hose attached to the air inlet, spraying for a few seconds and then pausing for a few seconds, repeating until only two-thirds of the bottle is sprayed.

Keep the cleaner positioned vertically during the spraying period. After that, turn on each mode of the air conditioner once to ensure that each air duct is cleaned. The entire duration should be 10-20 minutes.

5. Treat Each Outlet

After the above treatment, turn off the engine. Put the remaining one-third of the cleaner from each air outlet in the car. At this time, you will see water drop from the bottom of the car, which is the cleaner being discharged with the air conditioning condensate.

6. Dry the Air Ducts

After spraying and leaving it for about half an hour, make sure there is no water discharged from the bottom. Then carry out the last step: start the engine, set the air conditioning air volume to the maximum, set the highest temperature, and blow the air duct cleaner dry with high temperature.
